Maisteritutkielmani tarkastelee vanhuutta taiteellisen tutkimuksen keinoin. Lähestyn aihetta arjen estetiikan näkökulmasta – siitä, miten ihminen aistii, kokee ja tulkitsee ympäristöään. Tutkimuksen taustalla vaikuttavat ympäristöestetiikka, gerontologinen tutkimus sekä sosiokulttuurisen innostamisen periaatteet, jotka korostavat yhteisöllisyyttä, osallisuutta ja kriittistä pedagogiikkaa.
Kirjoitan taiteilijan kokemuksesta käsin: yhdistän omaelämäkerrallisia havaintoja, dialogisia runoja, kuvia ja teoreettista ajattelua. Tämä monikerroksinen tapa kirjoittaa ei ole vain tyylivalinta – se on myös tutkimusmenetelmä, joka tekee näkyväksi sen, miten taiteilijan katse ja herkkyys voivat avata vanhuuteen liittyviä piilossa olevia merkityksiä.
Tutkimus haastaa hoito- ja sairauskeskeisen näkökulman vanhuuteen. Ehdotan, että vanhalla ihmisellä on oikeus omaan estetiikkaansa: omaan tapaan olla, kokea, tunnistaa maailmaa ja rakentaa yhteyttä ympäristöönsä. Estetiikka ei ole tässä yhteydessä koristelua, vaan tapa tulla nähdyksi kokonaisena ihmisenä.
Nostan esiin myös sen, miten taiteen asiantuntijuus voi rikastaa vanhustyötä. Kun työssä on tilaa ei-tiedolle, kehollisuudelle ja kokemuksellisuudelle, syntyy uudenlaista yhteisöllisyyttä ja arvopohjaa – tiloja, joissa vanhuus saa olla omanlaisensa eikä pelkisty hoivan välineellisyyteen.
Tutkimukseni kutsuu monialaiseen dialogiin. Sen ytimessä on kysymys:

My master’s thesis approaches ageing through artistic research and the lens of everyday aesthetics—the subtle ways in which people sense, interpret, and relate to their surroundings. The work is grounded in environmental aesthetics, gerontological and multidisciplinary ageing studies, and the principles of sociocultural animation within critical pedagogy. Together, these perspectives emphasise sensitivity in observing the relationships between individuals, communities, and their lived environments.
My writing weaves together autobiographical fragments, dialogical poetry, images, and theoretical reflection. This layered approach is not only stylistic but methodological: it reveals how an artist’s gaze can uncover meanings in ageing that remain hidden in clinical or institutional framings.
The thesis challenges medicalised and care-centred narratives of ageing. Instead of focusing on decline or dependency, I highlight the importance of recognising and valuing the unique identity and aesthetic presence of older people. Here, aesthetics refers not to decoration or taste, but to a person’s own way of perceiving, sensing, shaping experience, and belonging to the world.
The work also proposes that artistic expertise can enrich the value base and everyday practices of eldercare. When professional environments make room for not-knowing, embodied experience, and sensory attention, new forms of community and dignity become possible—forms that allow ageing to be lived on one’s own terms.
Ultimately, this thesis invites a multidisciplinary dialogue. At its core lies a simple but profound question:
What becomes possible when ageing is approached aesthetically and ethically—through art, through people, and through the lived textures of everyday life?
